Over 800 APC, PDP, And ADP Members Defect To NNPP In Ogun State.
In a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, more than 800 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Action Democratic Party (ADP) have defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State. The mass defection, which took place on Thursday, 22 May 2025, at the NNPP secretariat in Ijebu-Igbo, drew party leaders, grassroots mobilisers, and supporters from all 11 wards of the local government.
The event marked a growing wave of political realignments in Nigeria, as citizens express frustration with the status quo. Barrister John Olufemi Aina, the Ogun State Chairman of NNPP, welcomed the defectors, describing their move as “a bold and patriotic decision to abandon sinking ships and join the only party with a genuine rescue mission for Nigeria.”
Addressing the jubilant crowd, Aina criticised the APC and PDP, accusing them of monopolising Nigeria’s democracy for over two decades while the nation grapples with poverty, insecurity, unemployment, ritual killings, and economic stagnation. “Your defection today signals a new dawn,” he declared. “NNPP welcomes you as equal members—there will be no discrimination. This is your new political home, and together, we will work to rescue this country.”
Alhaja Shakirat Arowolo, the NNPP State Secretary, urged the new members to prepare for the upcoming electoral process, particularly when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) opens voter registration. “Let’s mobilise across all the wards in Ijebu North and spread the message of the NNPP to every nook and cranny. The task of rebuilding Nigeria begins now,” she said.
Mr. Ogunyemi, the NNPP Chairman in Ijebu North, expressed confidence that the party is poised to become a formidable force at both state and national levels. “The people are tired of recycled promises and anti-people policies,” he said. “These defectors left because they were disappointed by the insensitivity of their former party leaders.” He confirmed that the NNPP is already activating structures across all 11 wards in Ijebu North to ensure a strong showing in the 2027 elections.
The ceremony was filled with excitement as party supporters danced and cheered while the defectors were presented with NNPP flags and insignias, symbolising their formal acceptance into the party. The event underscores growing discontent among Nigerians over rising inflation, security challenges, and governance issues, which political observers suggest could reshape the nation’s political landscape in the coming years.
This defection follows other recent political movements, including a Labour Party lawmaker’s resignation to join the APC in Delta and calls from APGA’s youth leader for fresh leadership ahead of 2027. As Nigeria’s political scene continues to evolve, the NNPP’s growing momentum in Ogun State signals a potential shift in the balance of power.
