Russia Launches Deadly Drone And Missile Assault On Kyiv, Killing At Least 10.

In one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital in months, Russia unleashed a barrage of over 400 drones and 32 missiles on Kyiv overnight on 17 June 2025, claiming at least 10 lives and injuring 134, according to updated figures from Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko. Initially reported as 14 deaths, Klymenko later clarified that some body parts were mistakenly counted as separate victims, revising the toll to 10. The assault, described as a “brutal strike” by the Kyiv Independent, targeted civilian infrastructure, leaving dozens of apartments destroyed and the city reeling.

The attack began in the early hours, with explosions echoing across Kyiv for nearly nine hours, according to local officials. Russian forces deployed 440 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including cluster bomb-equipped drones, and missiles, some identified as hypersonic “Dagger” missiles, aimed at densely populated residential areas in cities like Kyiv and Odesa. The assault caused widespread destruction, with images from the State Emergency Service showing shattered buildings and emergency crews navigating rubble to rescue survivors.

Among the stories of survival, 18-year-old student Melania Potocka expressed relief after her dormitory was hit by fragments of an intercepted Russian missile. “I thought I wouldn’t make it,” she told Reuters, highlighting the terror felt by civilians caught in the onslaught. The attack’s scale has reignited fears of escalating Russian aggression, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemning the strike as a deliberate targeting of civilian life.

The bombardment comes amid heightened tensions, with posts on X accusing Russian forces of intensifying attacks on Ukraine’s urban centres while international attention is divided. Some users referenced unverified claims of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions being discussed at the G7, though these remain inconclusive without official confirmation. The assault has drawn sharp criticism, with Zelenskiy calling for stronger international support to counter Russia’s military escalation.

Kyiv’s resilience was evident as emergency services worked tirelessly, but the human cost is stark. The injured, numbering at least 134, are being treated in hospitals across the city, with fears that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue. The attack underscores the ongoing toll of the conflict, now in its third year, with no immediate resolution in sight.

The international community has yet to issue a unified response, but the strike has renewed calls for bolstered air defences for Ukraine. As Kyiv mourns, the world watches a city under siege, its people enduring yet another chapter of devastation.
