Super Falcons Hold Portugal To Resilient Goalless Draw In Pre-WAFCON Friendly.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria delivered a commanding performance in their international friendly against Portugal, securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw at the Estádio José Gomes in Amadora, Lisbon, on Monday night. This match, a key part of their preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, showcased the team’s defensive solidity and attacking promise as they gear up for their quest for a record-extending 10th continental title.

Under the guidance of head coach Justine Madugu, the nine-time African champions displayed resilience and tactical discipline against a strong Portuguese side, who are fine-tuning for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. The Super Falcons, ranked Africa’s top women’s team, stood firm, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie earning plaudits for a series of stunning saves that kept the hosts at bay. Midfielder Christy Ucheibe and forward Francisca Ordega also shone, with Ucheibe controlling the midfield and Ordega threatening Portugal’s defense with her pace and flair.

The first half saw both teams struggle to break the deadlock, with Nigeria maintaining a solid defensive shape while probing for opportunities. Despite limited clear-cut chances, the Super Falcons grew into the game, particularly in the second half, where the introduction of experienced players added dynamism. The team came close to snatching a late winner, with five minutes of added time offering hope, but the match ultimately ended goalless.

Coach Madugu expressed satisfaction with the result, emphasizing the team’s readiness for the upcoming WAFCON. “A stunning goalless draw away to Portugal confirms our preparation is on the right track,” he said. “We won’t take any team for granted in Morocco, but this performance shows our determination.” Madugu highlighted the contributions of key players like Nnadozie, Ucheibe, and Ordega, while stressing that the team remains focused on their group-stage opponents: Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

The Super Falcons arrived in Lisbon on Sunday after a three-day training camp in Abuja, where they honed their tactics at the MKO Abiola National Stadium and Turf Arena. The squad, which includes stars like captain Rasheedat Ajibade and former Atletico Madrid forward Omorinsola Babajide, departed Abuja via a Royal Air Maroc flight to Casablanca before continuing to Lisbon.

This friendly was the first of two crucial warm-up matches for Nigeria. The team will now travel to Morocco for a blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Queens on June 29 at the Lanouria Complex. This encounter promises to reignite one of West Africa’s fiercest football rivalries, setting the stage for an intense buildup to WAFCON, which runs from July 5 to July 26, 2025.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rallied behind the team with its “Mission X” campaign, aimed at galvanizing support from Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. “The Super Falcons remain the most decorated national team in African football,” the NFF stated. “We are proud of their achievements and call on fans to support their pursuit of a 10th WAFCON title.”

The goalless draw against Portugal, a team preparing for a tough UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 group stage against Spain, Belgium, and Italy, underscores Nigeria’s ability to compete with Europe’s best. Fans took to X to celebrate the result, with posts praising Nnadozie’s heroics and the team’s resilience. “Scenes from our hard-fought draw in #PORNGA show we’re ready for #WAFCON2024!” shared the Super Falcons’ official account, accompanied by action-packed images from the match.

As the Super Falcons head to Casablanca for their group-stage matches at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, the team’s focus remains clear. With a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents, Nigeria is poised to make a strong case for WAFCON glory. Their campaign kicks off against Tunisia on July 6, and if Monday’s performance is any indication, the Super Falcons are ready to soar.

Follow the Super Falcons’ journey to WAFCON 2025 as they continue their preparations in Morocco, with their next friendly against Ghana on June 29.
