Former Arsenal Star Thomas Partey Charged With Multiple Counts Of Rape And Sexual Assault.

Thomas Partey, the former Arsenal midfielder and Ghana international, has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police Service confirmed on Friday, 4 July 2025. The charges, which relate to alleged incidents involving three women between 2021 and 2022, follow a lengthy investigation that began in February 2022 after an initial report of rape was made to authorities.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the charges after reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence compiled by Metropolitan Police detectives. Jaswant Narwal, of the CPS, stated, “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised the prosecution of Thomas Partey for multiple counts of rape – after carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence. Our prosecutors have worked closely with officers in the Metropolitan Police who have carried out the investigation, to review the evidence and advise on the appropriate charges.”

The charges break down as follows: two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape concerning a second woman, and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. Partey, 32, of Hertfordshire, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, emphasised the police’s commitment to supporting the alleged victims. “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward,” he said. “We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.” The Metropolitan Police have provided an email address, CIT@met.police.uk, for those wishing to contact investigators.

Partey’s lawyer has stated that the footballer “denies all the charges against him” and “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.” The CPS has urged the public to respect the legal process, noting that criminal proceedings are active and that Partey has the right to a fair trial. They have also reminded media outlets and the public to avoid reporting or sharing information that could prejudice the case, in line with the Contempt of Court Act 1981.

Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 for a reported £45 million, was a key figure in the club’s midfield during his five-year tenure. He made 52 appearances in all competitions during the 2024-25 season, helping Arsenal finish second in the Premier League and reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and Champions League. His contract with the club expired on 30 June 2025, leaving him a free agent just days before the charges were announced.

The case has sparked significant controversy, with some critics questioning Arsenal’s decision to continue playing Partey during the investigation. A petition launched in 2024 on Change.org, which garnered support from fans, called for the club to suspend him pending the outcome of the probe, arguing that his continued presence on the pitch showed “disrespect for victims of sexual assault.” The allegations have also reignited broader discussions about how football clubs and governing bodies handle such cases, with calls for stricter guidelines on player suspensions during ongoing investigations.

The Metropolitan Police and Rape Crisis, an independent charity, have reiterated their support for victims of sexual violence. Rape Crisis operates a 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line for those affected. As the case progresses, authorities have stressed the importance of responsible reporting to ensure a fair trial.

Partey, who has 53 caps for Ghana and has scored 15 goals for his national team, now faces a significant legal battle that could have profound implications for his career and reputation. The footballing world awaits further developments as the court date approaches.
