Gateway International Airport Secures NCAA Approval For Commercial Flights.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted approval for the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Ilisan-Iperu, Ogun State, to commence commercial flight operations, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s aviation sector. The announcement, made on Friday, 15 August 2025, follows a rigorous process of technical inspections, on-site verifications, and facility audits, positioning the airport as a new hub for trade, investment, and tourism in the region.

The approval, issued under Part 12.15.17 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs), grants the airport an Interim Aerodrome Operational Permit, certified with an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an ARFFS Category of 6, with a non-precision runway for Runway 05/23 and an Area Navigation (RNAV) approach type. This certification enables the airport to operate scheduled commercial air transport flights, a historic first for Nigeria, as confirmed by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

A major international aviation company is set to launch two weekly cargo flights from London to Gateway International Airport, boosting Ogun State’s connectivity to global markets. The airport will also serve as the designated alternate to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, enhancing operational resilience for the region. Passenger services are planned to follow, with initial direct routes to Abuja and Port Harcourt, further expanding travel options for Nigerians.

The Gateway International Airport has been lauded for its world-class infrastructure. During a visit in December 2024, officials from the NCAA, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) praised the quality of facilities, including the control tower, weather monitoring areas, runway, fire service stations, and apron. These were deemed among the best in West Africa, with NCAA’s Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards noting significant improvements, describing the control tower as comparable to global standards.

Governor Abiodun described the approval as a transformative achievement, stating, “This milestone places Ogun State on the global map, unlocking new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism.” The airport’s strategic location and modern facilities are expected to redefine air travel standards in Nigeria, offering a seamless experience for passengers and cargo operators alike.

The launch of commercial operations at Gateway International Airport is poised to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance Ogun State’s position as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation landscape. As the airport prepares for its first flights, stakeholders anticipate a new era of connectivity and prosperity for the region.
