The House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations has engaged Minister of Finance Wale Edun and Minister of Budget and National Planning Atiku Bagudu over the pace of implementation of the 2024-2025 Appropriations Act.
The committee expressed concern over the level of budget execution, with Chairman Abubakar Bichi stating that Nigerians are increasingly worried about the progress. “Our members are seriously concerned, and the ministers have promised that before the end of this year, Nigerians will witness significant changes and developments,” Bichi said.
Edun disclosed that as of September 2025, about 80% of the 2024 budget had been implemented. “Overall, implementation is at about 80%. As you know, the National Assembly extended the 2024 budget till December, so it is still running,” he added. The minister emphasized that the 2025 budget prioritizes grassroots projects and critical infrastructure like roads, irrigation, and facilities that directly impact citizens.
The committee commended the achievements recorded under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and appreciated the executive’s respect for the National Assembly. Bagudu noted that lawmakers particularly appreciated the Executive’s respect for the National Assembly and the cordial working relationship between both arms of government. “The National Assembly has supported all major reform initiatives of this administration, including the recent tax reforms, which are already yielding results,” he said.
The ministers assured the committee that Nigerians will begin to see visible results from the budget before the end of the year. The engagement highlighted the importance of prioritizing projects that directly impact citizens, including rural roads, irrigation schemes, and social infrastructure. Edun clarified that there was no discussion on a supplementary budget for 2025, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to faithful and full execution of the existing budget.
