Abigail Katung Becomes Leeds’ First African Lord Mayor, Tope Awotona Tops Wealth Charts

Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, a British Nigerian, has been appointed as the Lord Mayor of Leeds, marking a historic moment as the first elected African Councillor in the city’s history. 

Concurrently, Tope Awotona, a Nigerian-born entrepreneur, has officially been declared the wealthiest Nigerian immigrant residing in the United States.

 

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed her heartfelt congratulations to Councillor Katung for the well-deserved appointment. She highlighted Katung’s past achievements and positive impact on humanity, expressing confidence in her ability to lead Leeds effectively for the term 2024-2025.





 

Tope Awotona, aged 42 and the founder/CEO of the scheduling software company Calendly, has attained the status of the richest Nigerian immigrant in the US. Forbes reports his net worth at an impressive $1.2 billion, with his company’s valuation exceeding $3 billion. Awotona’s journey from a teenage immigrant to a billionaire entrepreneur showcases the remarkable success that can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

 

 

In a congratulatory message conveyed by the Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa commended both individuals for their remarkable achievements. She urged Nigerians in Leeds to support Councillor Katung, emphasizing the importance of rallying around her for national development.

 

 

Councillor Katung currently holds the position of Chair of Scrutiny Board for Infrastructure, Investment, and Inclusive Growth, further highlighting her dedication to contributing to the community’s development.
