Adekanmbi Confirms Direct International Flight Plans For Ibadan Airport

Airport expansion project signals major boost for trade, tourism, and investment.

Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria — In a major boost to regional aviation and international connectivity, the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport is poised to commence direct international flight operations before the end of 2026, a key official has announced. The move, long awaited by both the government and the aviation sector, marks a strategic milestone in the transformation of one of Nigeria’s key domestic airports into a fully-fledged international gateway.

What’s Been Announced

Bimbo Adekanmbi, Chairman of the 11-member committee overseeing the airport’s upgrade project, confirmed to journalists in Ibadan that direct international flights — meaning flights that originate at Ibadan and fly straight to overseas destinations without stopovers — are expected to begin before 2026 draws to a close.

Though some airlines have recently begun offering Ibadan–London options, these services currently involve stopovers, such as in Abuja, which technically do not qualify as direct international flights. The goal, Adekanmbi stated, is for truly nonstop international connectivity once the new international terminal is complete.

Airport Upgrades Underway

Significant infrastructure work at the airport has laid the groundwork for this transition:
  • Runway extension: The runway has been expanded from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres and widened from 45 metres to 60 metres — dimensions suitable to handle larger, wide-bodied international aircraft.

  • Night operations capability: Runway lights have been restored, enabling safe takeoffs and landings after sunset.

  • Instrument Landing System (ILS): Modern landing technology has been installed to support aircraft operations under various weather conditions.

  • Expanded apron space: More space on the apron allows the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and improve turnaround efficiency.

  • Support services enhancement: New operational vehicles have been deployed for key aviation agencies on site, including safety, security, and airspace management teams.

The international terminal, which will serve as the heart of scheduled global operations, is currently about 40–50% complete, with work ongoing and expected to be ready for operations in the latter part of 2026.

Economic and Strategic Impacts

Adekanmbi emphasised that beyond passenger flights, the upgraded airport is expected to become a catalyst for economic growth in Oyo State and the broader southwest region. Plans are in place to develop:
  • A cargo terminal, which would enable direct export and import activity through Ibadan, benefiting farmers, manufacturers, and traders.

  • Bonded warehouses, to facilitate smoother customs procedures and logistics operations.

These enhancements are anticipated to foster trade, investment, and job creation, transforming Ibadan from a predominantly consumer-oriented economy to one with stronger production and export capacity.

Connectivity & Future Prospects

Domestic flight services have already resumed fully, with regular services to Abuja and other national destinations. Additionally, the airport is being positioned to support other key operations such as Hajj pilgrim flights later in the year — a sign of readiness to handle significant international movements both in cargo and passengers.

Officials also highlighted that improved road links being developed by the Oyo State government will enhance accessibility to the airport, further integrating it with regional transport networks.

Why This Matters

If realised, direct international flights from Ibadan would:
  • Reduce travel time and costs for residents of Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara and surrounding states who currently rely on Lagos or Abuja for overseas travel.

  • Boost tourism and business travel to and from southwestern Nigeria.

  • Strengthen Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, promoting competition and connectivity with global markets.

Timeline: Ibadan Airport’s Journey to International Status

1. Upgrade Approval & Planning Phase (Early–Mid 2024)

  • The Oyo State Government initiated plans to transform the airport from a domestic facility into an international gateway.

  • A dedicated 11-member upgrade committee was established, chaired by Adekanmbi.

  • Engineering assessments confirmed the need for runway expansion and terminal reconstruction to meet international aviation standards.

2. Runway Expansion & Airside Improvements (Late 2024 – Early 2025)

Major structural upgrades began:
  • Runway extended from 2,400m to 3,000m

  • Runway widened from 45m to 60m

  • Installation of a modern Instrument Landing System (ILS)

  • Restoration of full runway lighting for night operations

  • Expansion of apron space to accommodate larger aircraft

These improvements allow the airport to handle wide-body aircraft typically used for international routes.

3. International Terminal Construction (2025 – Ongoing)

  • Construction of a new international terminal building commenced.

As of the latest update, the terminal is approximately 40–50% complete.

The facility will include:

  • Immigration and customs areas

  • International departure and arrival halls

  • Enhanced security screening systems

Completion is projected for late 2026.

4. Cargo & Logistics Development (2025–2026)

Parallel to passenger upgrades:
  • Plans for a cargo terminal

  • Development of bonded warehouses

  • Strengthening of aviation agency infrastructure on site

This phase is expected to position Ibadan as a regional export hub for agricultural and manufactured goods.

5. Commencement of Direct International Flights (Target: Before End of 2026)

According to Adekanmbi:
  • Fully direct international operations (nonstop overseas flights), are expected to begin before the end of 2026.

Initial routes may likely include major hubs in:

  • The United Kingdom

  • The Middle East

  • Possibly West African regional connections

What This Means for the Region

When international operations begin, residents of:
  • Oyo

  • Osun

  • Ekiti

  • Kwara

will no longer need to rely primarily on Lagos or Abuja for overseas travel.

It also strengthens southwestern Nigeria’s aviation network and could significantly boost trade, tourism, and foreign investment.

In summary

The plans outlined by Adekanmbi signal a significant leap forward for Ibadan Airport and Nigeria’s aviation sector. With major upgrades moving closer to completion, the dream of direct international flights is drawing nearer — potentially reshaping the travel and economic landscape of the region by the end of 2026.
