African Badminton Championship: Nigeria Saw Off Egypt In Style

Nigeria humbled Egypt 4-1 in the women’s team championships tagged ‘Uber Cup” at the ongoing 2024 All African Senior Badminton Championship in Egypt.

African Badminton Championship kicked off days ago and Nigerian duo of Dorcas Adesokan and Sofiat Obanisola defeated Rahma Eladawy and Hana Zaher 2-1 (18-21, 21-8, 21-16) while Deborah Ukeh and Ramatu Yakubu came from a set down to beat Jana Abdelkader and Doha Hany 2-1 (12-21, 21-17, 21-19) in the women’s doubles.

Dorcas and Sofiat in action

In the women’s singles, Sofiat Obanisola beat Hana Zaher 2-0 (21-15, 21-13); while Dorcas Adesokan defeated Jana Abdelkader 2-0 (21-7, 21-18) while Zainab Alabi lost to Doha Hany 0-2 (11-21, 17-21).

Likewise, Nigeria men’s team recorded an impressive 3-2 win over Mauritius in an exciting encounter on Monday.





Godwin Olofua gave Nigeria an early lead by beating Khemtish Nundah (Mauritius) 2-0 (21-15, 21-12), before Jean Bongout restored parity for Mauritius winning against Joseph Emmanuel 2-0 (21-14, 21-13). African number one, Anuoluwapo Opeyori made it 2-1 with his win over Georges Paul 2-1 (17-21, 21-13, 21-17).

The pair of Joseph Emmanuel and Victor Ikechukwu defeated Lucas Douce and Khemtish Nundah 2-1 (24-26, 21-17, 21-9) to give Nigeria the lead of 3-1 points before Jean Bongout defeated Godwin Olofua and Anuoluwapo Opeyori 2-1 (15-21, 21-10, 21-15) in the doubles event to make it 3-2

Earlier, Uganda beat Nigeria 4-1 in the women’s team championships.

Nigeria lost three singles events, one doubles while winning one doubles from Dorcas Adesokan and Sofiat Obanisola.

Up next Nigeria will face South Africa in the Men’s team championship at the African Badminton Championship on Tuesday.
