Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the African Games champion, achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new indoor African record in shot put and surpassing the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying mark with a massive 21.63m throw at the Hvězdy V Nehvizdech meeting in the Czech Republic in February.

Enekwechi’s performance shattered the 13-year-old African indoor record of 21.47m set by Janus Roberts of South Africa in 2001 during an Olympics qualifier event.

Likewise at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Tobi Amusan, the two-time African defending champion, showcased her prowess in the women’s 100m hurdles, leading the chart in heat two and positioning herself for a successful title defense.

Amoanimma Rose Yeboah secured gold in the women’s high jump final with a personal best height of 1.89m, narrowly missing out on surpassing South Africa’s Hestrie Cloete, who holds a 1.96m record.

In other events, South Africa’s Pretorious Fredriech clinched gold in the men’s decathlon with a score of 6888, while Edwin Kipmutai from Kenya set a national record and took silver with 6476 points. Algerian Dhiae Cherif Boudoumi won bronze with 6195 points.

Usheoritse Itsekiri of Nigeria claimed silver in the men’s 100m final with a time of 10.23 seconds, narrowly losing to Cameroon’s Emmanuel Alobwede Eseme, who secured gold with an impressive 10.14-second finish. Hainuca Gilbert from Namibia took the bronze with a time of 10.29 seconds.

In the women’s 100m event, Gina Mariam Bittaye from Gambia secured gold with a time of 11.36 seconds, followed by Alyse McCoy from Liberia with silver (11.49 seconds) and Nigeria’s Olayinka Olajide with bronze (11.55 seconds).

Adding to Nigeria’s medal tally, Elizabeth Anyanacho claimed gold in Taekwondo by defeating Egypt’s Mohammed Aya, the top-ranked African, in a thrilling match that lasted three round
