Nigeria showcased its boxing prowess at the ongoing African Games in Ghana, securing a remarkable tally of eight gold medals in a stunning display of skill and determination.
On the final day of boxing action, Nigerian boxers delivered resounding victories across various weight categories, clinching eight out of the ten finals they competed in.
The women’s team shined brightly, securing five gold medals through outstanding performances by Jacinta Umunnakwe (81kg), Blessing Oraekwe (70kg), Cynthia Ogunsemilore (60kg), Patricia Mbata (75kg), and Joy Nene Ojo (57kg).
Meanwhile, the men’s team contributed three gold medals to Nigeria’s impressive haul, with Ifeanyi Onyekwere (92+kg), Adams Olaore (92kg), and Omole Dolapo (57kg) emerging as champions in their respective categories.
While Nigeria’s dominance was clear, Shukura Kareem (54kg) and Zainab Adeshina (50kg) added silver medals to the country’s medal count in the boxing event.
Overall, Team Nigeria maintained a strong second-place position on the medal table, boasting a total of 47 gold, 35 silver, and 43 bronze medals. Egypt continued to lead with 98 gold, followed by South Africa in third place with 32 gold medals.
The 13th edition of the African Games concluded on Saturday, March 23, 2024, marking the end of an eventful and successful tournament for athletes across the continent.
