Senator John Owan Enoh, the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, has commended Nigerian athletes for their exceptional performances at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Following an impressive Day 3 of athletics, Nigeria secured an additional four gold medals and set new records, earning praise from Senator Enoh.

The Minister expressed admiration for the athletes’ accomplishments, highlighting the pride they bring to the nation. “I salute our gallant sportsmen and women who have excelled in Accra,” said Senator Enoh. “Okezie’s breakthrough in the 400m, our sprinters’ success in the finals, and our boxers’ strength and skill are invaluable moments for us as a nation.”

A notable highlight was Nigeria’s victory in the men’s and women’s 4 x 100m relay events. The men’s team’s triumph, with a time of 38.41 seconds, avenged a defeat to Ghana from 21 years ago. Similarly, the women’s team secured gold in 43.05 seconds, outperforming Liberia and Ghana who claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

Chidi Okezie’s historic win in the men’s 400m marked a significant milestone, breaking a 37-year record and becoming the first Nigerian man to achieve this since 1987. Meanwhile, Tobi Amusan, the world record holder, dominated the women’s 100m hurdles, reinforcing her reputation as a premier athlete.

In boxing, Team Nigeria showcased exceptional prowess, winning all five semifinal bouts. Zainab Adeshina, Joy Ojo, Mbata Patricia, Omole Dolapo, and Olaore Adams emerged victorious, advancing to the finals in their respective events.

Senator Enoh expressed pride in the athletes’ performances and encouraged them to maintain focus for the remaining events. As Nigeria continues to excel across various sports, the nation unites in celebrating the achievements of its sporting heroes.

“Our athletes have demonstrated outstanding talent and determination at the African Games,” Senator Enoh remarked. “Their success reflects the spirit of excellence in Nigerian sports. I applaud their dedication and urge them to stay committed as they pursue further victories”.
