Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu has assumed office as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu after a decade of service.
Yakubu officially stepped down on Tuesday during the commission’s quarterly meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja, which he described as his last engagement as chairman.
He said his decision to leave was in accordance with the provisions of Section 306 of the 1999 Constitution, adding that it would allow for a smooth leadership transition as the commission prepares for future elections.
By consensus of the National Commissioners, Agbamuche-Mbu, who is the most senior by date of appointment, was appointed to take charge of the commission in an acting capacity.
In his farewell message, Yakubu highlighted key reforms achieved under his tenure, including biometric voter registration, electronic result transmission, and online nomination systems, which he said strengthened electoral transparency.
He expressed appreciation to political parties, security agencies, civil society groups, the media, and youth corps members for their support during his tenure, and unveiled two publications documenting INEC’s achievements between 2015 and 2025.
