AI Revolution Set To Transform Legal Profession, Experts Say

AI Revolution Set To Transform Legal Profession, Experts Say.

The legal profession is on the cusp of a seismic shift, with artificial intelligence (AI) poised to redefine how legal services are delivered and even how justice is administered, according to leading voices at a recent plenary session in Nigeria.

In a bold address, a prominent legal expert described AI as “the most profound revolution that our profession has ever experienced,” predicting it will “radically change the delivery of legal services and even adjudication forever.” The speaker highlighted that lawyers are no longer the sole gatekeepers of legal knowledge or custodians of legal reasoning and opinions, as AI systems like ChatGPT and other advanced tools increasingly take on these roles.

To prepare for this new era, the expert called for an urgent overhaul of legal education. “We should be looking at an enhanced curriculum for legal training if students have to be competitive in the years to come,” he urged, advocating for the integration of legal technology and AI into law school programmes. This would equip students to critically assess AI-generated outputs, ensuring they remain relevant in a rapidly evolving profession.

The session, held in Bayelsa State, was officially opened by Governor Douye Diri, who acknowledged the transformative potential of AI but also its challenges. “Most people are threatened by AI,” Diri noted, warning that “if it goes the way it is perceived, a lot of people would lose their jobs.” However, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding judicial independence. “We will always continue to work in the rule of law where justice will prevail and where justice will be served in an impartial manner,” he pledged.

Governor Diri also praised the legal profession’s critical role in Nigeria’s democracy, describing lawyers and judges as “the last hope of the common man.” Reflecting on his own journey, he added, “If not for you, I would not be standing here today as Governor of Bayelsa State.”

The plenary session, attended by legal professionals and policymakers, sparked lively discussions on how Nigeria’s legal system can adapt to the AI revolution while preserving its core principles of justice and fairness. As the nation grapples with these changes, the message was clear: embracing technology is not just an option but a necessity for the future of the legal profession.

By integrating AI into legal practice and education, Nigeria’s lawyers can lead the way in harnessing this revolution to deliver faster, more accessible justice – ensuring the rule of law remains a cornerstone of society.
