The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has assured Nigerian workers that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation will not put their retirement security at risk but will instead strengthen the pension system through the adoption of smart and technology-driven solutions.

Speaking at the 2025 Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) Conference held in Ibadan, Oyo State, the Director-General of PenCom, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, emphasized that AI presents an opportunity to modernize Nigeria’s pension framework. The conference was themed “Future of Work in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: A Wake-Up Call for Stakeholders.”

Oloworaran praised LAWAN for initiating the discussion at a time when technology is redefining global work patterns. She said, “As the world of work evolves under the influence of artificial intelligence and digital transformation, it becomes imperative for all stakeholders — government, labour, and industry — to rethink policies and protections for workers in the modern economy.”

Highlighting PenCom’s efforts to integrate technology, Oloworaran revealed that the commission had launched Pension Revolution 2.0, a digital reform initiative designed to automate and simplify pension administration. She explained that the new system will improve efficiency, speed, and accessibility for contributors. “By automating the issuance of Pension Clearance Certificates and streamlining benefits processing, PenCom is creating a pension system that aligns with the realities of today’s digital economy,” she added.

The PenCom boss further disclosed that the redesigned Personal Pension Plan (PPP) will be technologically enabled to make the onboarding process seamless and transparent for contributors. According to her, the adoption of digital tools ensures sustainability in pension management and enhances trust among Nigerian workers.

Oloworaran also commended the media and LAWAN members for their continued partnership in raising public awareness on pension matters. She reaffirmed PenCom’s commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure that Nigerian workers remain adequately protected and well-prepared for the emerging digital age.
