Airtel Africa plc has officially confirmed the retirement of its Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun “Segun” Ogunsanya, effective from July 1, 2024. Ogunsanya, who has been with Airtel since 2012, played a pivotal role in the company’s growth, particularly during his nine-year tenure overseeing the Nigeria Operations before becoming the Group CEO in 2021.

During his leadership, Airtel Africa experienced sustained double-digit revenue growth and introduced innovative products across the continent. Notably, Ogunsanya oversaw the launch of the company’s first Sustainability Strategy, laying the groundwork for its commitment to sustainability initiatives and charitable operations.

In a strategic move, Mr. Ogunsanya will assume the role of the inaugural Chair of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation post-retirement.

The foundation, as an independent legal entity, will focus on accelerating sustainability initiatives, with objectives centered around digital inclusion, financial inclusion, access to education, and environmental protection.

In addition to his role as Chair, Mr. Ogunsanya will remain available for a 12-month advisory period, offering guidance to the Chairman, the Airtel Africa Board, and the Chief Executive Officer.

The company has announced the appointment of Sunil Taldar as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, set to succeed Mr. Ogunsanya upon his retirement. Mr. Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as Director – Transformation, will undergo a transition period working alongside Ogunsanya before officially assuming the CEO role on July 1, 2024.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa plc, expressed gratitude for Ogunsanya’s contributions and leadership, acknowledging his commitment to the company.

He also welcomed Sunil Taldar as the Group’s next CEO, citing Taldar’s industry experience, strategic vision, and customer-focused approach as key attributes for leading Airtel Africa in its next stages of development.

Ogunsanya, in his farewell statement, expressed pride in the achievements of Airtel Africa during his tenure and stated that now is the right time for a new leader to build on the company’s strengths.

He mentioned his renewed interest in contributing to the empowerment of Africans through digital and financial inclusion in a non-profit capacity, after a successful career spanning over 35 years in banking, FMCG, and telecommunications.
