The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians about falsified batches of Artemetrin DS and Ciprofit 500, highlighting serious health risks even when sourced from licensed distributors.
According to NAFDAC Public Alert No. 030/2025, these counterfeit drugs carry fake registration numbers and are not listed in the agency’s approved product database.
Using these falsified medications can lead to treatment failure, worsening of illness, adverse reactions, and in the case of antibiotics like Ciprofit 500, antimicrobial resistance.
NAFDAC advises the public to verify registration numbers on all medicines, inspect packaging for signs of tampering or poor-quality printing, and only purchase from reputable pharmacies and licensed healthcare providers.
Consumers who encounter these fake products are encouraged to report them immediately via 0700-1-NAFDAC (0700-1-623322) or email nafdac@nafdac.gov.ng.
“The circulation of falsified medicines poses a serious public health risk. Nigerians must remain vigilant and verify all drugs before use,” NAFDAC stated in the alert.
