Amad Diallo Double Inspires Manchester United To Europa League Victory Over PAOK

Amad Diallo Double Inspires Manchester United To Europa League Victory Over PAOK.

Amad Diallo’s second-half brace secured a crucial win for Manchester United over Greek champions PAOK, reviving their Europa League campaign and offering incoming manager Ruben Amorim hope of achieving a coveted top-eight finish. The 2-0 victory marked United’s first win in this season’s expanded competition after a series of three consecutive draws.

Diallo, United’s standout performer on the night, broke the deadlock with a looping header into the far corner just five minutes after the interval. He doubled United’s advantage 13 minutes from time, skilfully curling a shot from the edge of the area after overpowering defender Abdul Rahman Baba to gain possession.

PAOK missed a golden chance to equalise through Tarik Tissoudali, who squandered a close-range effort with only goalkeeper Andre Onana to beat. Onana also made a vital acrobatic save in the first half to deny Mady Camara, helping United keep a clean sheet in what was otherwise a subdued opening period.

The win was only United’s second in their last 12 European games and provides a promising start for Amorim, whose first home fixture as head coach will be against Bodo/Glimt in three weeks. The Portuguese manager takes over after leading Sporting to a stunning 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City earlier this week, a performance United struggled to emulate despite tonight’s win.

Questions remain over whether Amad Diallo can perform consistently for United, but his courage and determination were clear tonight. His opener came from a deep cross by captain Bruno Fernandes, which the 21-year-old deftly looped over PAOK’s goalkeeper, Dominik Kotarski, into the far corner. Diallo’s second goal was the result of individual skill and grit, as he muscled Baba off the ball 40 yards out, drove towards the edge of the area, and curled in a well-placed shot, aided slightly by a deflection.

Diallo’s performance earned the visible support of Fernandes, who offered encouragement to the young Ivorian, a gesture contrasting sharply with the frustration he showed towards Alejandro Garnacho for his slower decision-making in the first half. However, Diallo’s evening was cut short due to a knock he sustained shortly before being substituted, leaving United hopeful for a swift recovery.

Amorim’s immediate goal will be to lift United from their current 15th position in the group table to avoid February play-offs and secure a spot directly in the last 16. The upcoming fixtures include matches against Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzen, FCSB, and Rangers, with points from these encounters essential for progression.

Achieving a top-eight spot would also free up midweek dates, crucial for Amorim as he looks to establish his playing style with an intense schedule ahead. If United progress to the EFL Cup semi-finals by defeating Tottenham in December, Amorim could face seven midweek fixtures in his first eight weeks in charge.

Despite Diallo’s impactful display, United’s lack of a consistent scorer remains a concern. Rasmus Hojlund, tasked with leading the line, struggled again to make an impact, missing a clear header in the first half. Nevertheless, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy leaves on a positive note, having earned two wins and a draw in his short tenure, raising questions about whether sacked manager Erik ten Hag might have produced similar results had he remained at the helm.

As Amorim steps in, tonight’s win provides a foundation for building the consistency United need to advance in Europe and improve their domestic performance.
