At the United Nations Security Council debate on empowering women and youth in peacebuilding, U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the critical role of gender equality in achieving global peace and stability.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield began by extending gratitude to Japan for hosting the open debate and acknowledging Under-Secretary-General DiCarlo and Ambassador Danese for their valuable insights.

She also commended civil society representatives Dr. Williams and Ms. Bhagwan Rolls for their contributions.

Highlighting the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield underscored the importance of peace as the linchpin for advancing gender equity and securing fundamental freedoms for all individuals.

She pointed out the disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls, citing the devastating effects of the civil war in Sudan, which has led to widespread displacement, food insecurity, and sexual violence against women and girls.

Acknowledging the challenges of underreporting and stigma surrounding gender-based violence in conflict zones, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasised the need for collective action to prioritize gender issues and integrate Women, Peace, and Security principles into the Council’s work. She reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting UN conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts through strategic initiatives such as the U.S. Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability and the U.S. Strategy and National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security.

Proposing four key strategies for strengthening cooperation in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield called for enhanced support for the Peacebuilding Commission, closer collaboration with host governments, a holistic approach to addressing peace, development, and humanitarian issues, and the inclusion of women and youth in peacebuilding processes.

Emphasizing the transformative impact of women and young leaders in promoting sustainable peace, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield urged for their active participation in peace processes, highlighting their vital role in fostering inclusive and durable peacebuilding efforts.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield urged the Council to draw inspiration from the resilience and determination of women and youth peacebuilders worldwide and reaffirmed the commitment to advancing peace and security for all.

The Ambassador’s impassioned plea for gender equality and youth empowerment resonated strongly with attendees, underscoring the imperative for collective action to build a more peaceful and inclusive world.
