Ambassador Robert Wood, the United States’ Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs, addressed the Security Council during an open debate on “Strengthening UN Peacekeeping: Reflections for the Future,” calling for a renewed commitment to UN peacekeeping in the face of global challenges.
The debate, hosted by Slovenia, comes at a time when the UN’s peacekeeping missions face unprecedented strains due to fracturing political support.
Ambassador Wood expressed concerns about divisions within the Security Council, which have impacted peacekeeping operations, weakened the implementation of mandates, and undermined the trust of host governments.
“Unnecessary divisions within this Council have weakened support for peacekeeping, the ability of missions to implement their mandates effectively, and the confidence and support for the UN among host governments and parties to conflicts,” Ambassador Wood stated.
He emphasized that despite the current challenges, the United States remains committed to strengthening UN peacekeeping efforts.
He advocated for refining existing peacekeeping models while exploring new strategies that better respond to evolving conflict dynamics and political environments.
Wood also highlighted the importance of maintaining core peacekeeping principles, such as impartiality and operational freedom, to ensure the effectiveness and safety of peacekeeping personnel.
He further stressed that protecting civilians and fostering inclusive political solutions must remain at the heart of UN missions.
The ambassador also welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2719, which enables the UN to support African Union-led peace operations, as an important step toward bolstering regional peace efforts.
Ambassador Wood reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working with other Security Council members to safeguard the future of UN peacekeeping as an essential tool for international peace and security.
