The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, has successfully apprehended 55 individuals allegedly involved in a range of criminal activities across the state.

The suspects were paraded at the corps headquarters in Akure on Thursday, as announced by Adetunji Adeleye, the state Commander of the Corps.

Commander Adeleye revealed that the arrests took place at different locations within the state and included individuals accused of offenses such as arson, stealing, kidnapping, and robbery. The crackdown is part of the corps’ efforts to ensure a crime-free yuletide season, prompting the commencement of a 24-hour operation and patrol across all 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

He stated, “This ember months patrol is aimed at ensuring that commuters and residents of Ondo state enjoy the yuletide period without fear.” Adeleye emphasized the deployment of both uniformed and non-uniformed Amotekun personnel for streets by streets patrol in the state capital, addressing concerns of shop and house break-ins.

Furthermore, the Commander highlighted measures taken to safeguard financial institutions against potential robberies and noted a significant reduction in herders/farmers clashes.

“We are parading about 55 suspects; the majority have confessed to the crimes. The actual arrest is about 250, but having profiled them, we removed the 55 that we believe the court of law should determine whether they are fit to come back to society or go to the correctional services,” Adeleye explained.

In addition, Adeleye urged the government to tackle the root cause of rising crime rates by creating substantial job opportunities for the country’s youth. He emphasized the need for comprehensive social insurance and increased palliatives to support those facing difficulties in providing for themselves.

“I think the government should provide elaborate job opportunities. The economic situation of the country is harsh and tough. Because of this, the government should increase the palliatives to even those that they cannot feed,” he asserted.
