Amidst concerns over the selection process for a new traditional ruler, stakeholders from Azia Community in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State have appealed to the government for transparency and adherence to due process.
The community, represented by chiefs and other stakeholders, recently converged on the Government House in Awka to address their concerns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
They expressed concern regarding the possible nomination of someone they believe is unfit for the throne, referencing the person’s purported boast of receiving a certificate of recognition from the state government.
Waving placards with calls for fairness and inclusivity, the community stated their readiness to participate in a free and transparent selection process. They revealed that twelve individuals have shown interest in assuming the position of traditional ruler and urged government intervention to oversee the electoral process.
In a letter presented to Governor Soludo, the community outlined their commitment to conducting a fair and open selection process for the new Igwe of Azia. They called for the involvement of the relevant government ministry responsible for customs and tradition to monitor the proceedings and ensure legitimacy.
Responding to the community’s grievances, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Town Union Matters, Mr. Collins Nwabunwanne, reassured the stakeholders that the government would not impose any candidate on them.
He stated that the selection of the traditional ruler would be a decision made by the people, in accordance with the constitution of the town.
