In a disturbing turn of events, enraged youths wreaked havoc within the Angwa Rukuba-Etoo Baba community in the Jos area of Plateau State on Tuesday morning.
Reports indicate that the youths set ablaze the residence of a farmer and subsequently looted his poultry farm, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
Confirmation of the incident came from Mrs. Janet Haruna, a resident of the community, who spoke to PUNCH Online in Jos. According to Haruna, the youths’ actions were sparked by the alleged killing of a security guard who was reportedly employed by the farmer.
Haruna detailed the sequence of events, stating, “We need urgent assistance in our Angwa Rukuba-Etoo Baba community in Jos North LGA, as angry youths have set fire to a farmer’s house.
The flames engulfed the house, including vehicles parked in the compound, and spread to a neighboring building.”
The unrest erupted following accusations against the farmer’s son, who purportedly confronted the security guard over suspicions of theft at the poultry farm.
Tragically, the confrontation turned fatal as the security guard collapsed and died during the altercation. In retaliation, the youths targeted the farmer’s property, setting it ablaze.
Efforts to contain the situation were underway as authorities dispatched personnel from the state fire service to prevent further escalation. Additionally, security operatives were deployed to maintain order and prevent any further unrest.
In response to inquiries, the spokesperson for the state police command, Alabo Alfred, directed attention to the Divisional Police Officer overseeing the area, affirming that steps were being taken to address the unfolding crisis.
The incident underscores the pressing need for swift and effective measures to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents in the affected community.
