Arsenal Ban 24 Supporters for Abusive and Discriminatory Behaviour.
Arsenal Football Club has taken decisive action by banning 24 supporters for abusive and discriminatory behaviour, including incidents of racism and assault, during the 2022/23 season. The bans, ranging from one to three years, reflect the club’s commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all fans.
Fourteen of the offenders have been banned from both home and away matches for three years, while the remaining ten have received one-year bans. Most of the incidents occurred at the Emirates Stadium, the club’s home ground, with three individuals found guilty of abusive behaviour online.
Arsenal’s Managing Director, Richard Garlick, reinforced the club’s zero-tolerance approach, stating, “Abuse and discrimination will not be tolerated. We will continue to take strong action alongside our partners such as the Met Police against this abhorrent behaviour.” Garlick emphasised that while these actions stem from a minority of supporters, the club is determined to take appropriate measures against those identified as season ticket holders or members, and escalate cases to the police when necessary.
The incidents within the stadium included 10 cases of assault, five of tragedy chanting, two of offensive gestures, two of racism, one of homophobia, and one case of sexual assault. Online offences included one case each of racism, antisemitism, and sending abusive messages.
Arsenal has also highlighted the importance of education in tackling such issues, aiming to ensure that every fan feels welcome at the club. The hope is that these stringent measures will act as a deterrent against future abuse and discrimination.
