Arsenal Secure Narrow Victory Over Manchester United In Premier League Opener.

Arsenal kicked off the 2025/26 Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, 17 August 2025. The Gunners’ disciplined performance, capped by a first-half header from Riccardo Calafiori, ensured they claimed all three points in a pulsating encounter that marked the start of the new campaign for both sides.

The match, refereed by Simon Hooper with Paul Tierney on VAR duties, saw Manchester United, under manager Ruben Amorim, start brightly, dominating the opening exchanges. The Red Devils, buoyed by a vibrant Old Trafford crowd, pressed forward with intent, led by new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, alongside the dynamic Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu. However, Arsenal’s resolute defence, marshalled by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, held firm. The game’s decisive moment came in the 13th minute when Calafiori rose to head in a Declan Rice corner at close range, despite protests from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who claimed he was fouled by Saliba. The goal stood, giving Arsenal the lead against the run of play.

United responded with vigour, with Mbeumo and Dorgu testing Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya. Dorgu came closest, rattling the post with a fierce strike from distance, but the Reds couldn’t find a breakthrough. The first half ended with Arsenal leading 1-0, a scoreline that flattered the visitors given United’s attacking pressure.

The second half saw United maintain their intensity, with substitute Amad Diallo injecting fresh energy on the right flank. A notable moment came when Mbeumo’s overhead kick from a Bruno Fernandes cross was parried by Raya, and later, a penalty appeal for a challenge on Amad by Myles Lewis-Skelly was waved away. Arsenal, meanwhile, grew into the game, with Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice controlling the midfield. Despite late pressure from United, including a close-range header from Harry Maguire saved by Raya in stoppage time, Arsenal’s defence stood tall to secure the clean sheet.

Team line-ups confirmed United’s starting XI as Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw (Maguire 80); Dalot (Amad 55), Casemiro (Ugarte 65), Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Mount (Sesko 65), Cunha. Arsenal fielded Raya; White (Timber 71), Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori (Lewis-Skelly 72); Zubimendi, Rice (Merino 83), Ødegaard; Saka, Gyökeres (Havertz 60), Martinelli (Madueke 60). The Gunners’ substitutes included Arrizabalaga, Mosquera, Nwaneri, and Trossard, while United’s bench featured Heaton, Fredricson, Heaven, Mainoo, and Zirkzee.

Despite United’s dominance in possession (58%) and doubled shot attempts (10 compared to Arsenal’s 6), they couldn’t convert their chances, leaving Arsenal to celebrate a winning start to their campaign. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We showed character to withstand United’s pressure and take our chance.” Amorim, while disappointed, remained optimistic, noting, “We deserved something from the game, but we’ll build from this.”

The result sets the tone for Arsenal’s title aspirations, building on their consistent second-place finishes in recent seasons. For United, the defeat highlights the work ahead for Amorim’s revamped squad as they aim to climb the Premier League table after finishing 15th last season. Both teams now look ahead to their next fixtures, with Arsenal facing a stern test and United aiming to bounce back at Fulham on 24 August 2025.
