Arsenal Thrash PSV Eindhoven To Set Champions League Record

Arsenal Thrash PSV Eindhoven To Set Champions League Record .

Arsenal delivered a stunning performance in Eindhoven, dismantling PSV with a 7-1 victory to set a new Champions League record for the biggest away win in the knockout stages.

Mikel Arteta’s side, struggling to find the net in recent matches, rediscovered their attacking prowess in emphatic fashion. The result marks their highest-scoring game since a 7-3 win over Newcastle in the Premier League 13 years ago.

Despite the historic win, Arteta remained measured, stating that while the achievement was significant, the team’s focus remained on progressing in the competition.

“For sure, it’s something that hasn’t been done before, so great to be part of that,” Arteta said. “But as a team, we want to achieve many other things that are far more important than that. The happiest thing is that we are in a very strong position to go to the next round, which is where we want to be. But there’s still a job to do in London in a week’s time.”

The win was a statement of intent from Arsenal, who had failed to score in their previous two matches – a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest and a 1-0 loss to West Ham.

Former footballer Chris Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, praised the Gunners for their ruthlessness.

“This will give them great confidence for the rest of the season. Right from the start, Arsenal had control of the game. They were ruthless with their finishing, and some of the combination play in the final third was sensational. Martin Odegaard looked back to his best. To a man, they were really strong, and that centre-back pairing (Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba) is phenomenal. Arsenal will take some stopping in this competition.”

Nwaneri Shines as Arsenal’s Young Stars Impress

One of the standout moments of the night was Ethan Nwaneri’s goal, which showcased why he has earned Arteta’s trust. The 17-year-old has been filling in for Bukayo Saka, who is currently injured, and he has repaid that faith with an impressive goal tally.

Nwaneri’s strike against PSV was his eighth goal of the season, putting him alongside some of England’s most iconic young players. Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney each scored nine goals in all competitions before turning 18, and Nwaneri has 16 days before his 18th birthday to match or surpass that milestone.

Arteta praised the youngster’s mentality, stating, “I don’t think he needs any pushing. You see every time what the intention is. If it comes, it comes, and it’s great. I’m really impressed with the way he behaved and the way he played. It’s about consistency and now doing it again three days later in another big stadium.”

Nwaneri also became the third-youngest player to score in a Champions League knockout stage match, behind Bojan (17 years, 217 days) in 2008 and Jude Bellingham (17 years, 289 days) in 2021.

Teammate Declan Rice spoke highly of the young star, saying, “He’s 17 years old and he’s on the biggest stage. We’ve taken the youngsters under our wing, and they deserve to be playing. You should see them train—the way they have no fear and want to perform.”

Fellow academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly, who also started, impressed before being substituted in the first half to avoid a second booking. Captain Martin Odegaard praised both youngsters, saying, “They play like they have been here for many years. So much quality and confidence, they’re ready for it. I’m not worried about them. We enjoy having them in the team, and they have a great attitude.”

Arsenal Eye Quarter-Finals as Madrid Awaits

With the dominant victory, Arsenal are now poised to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they are set to face the winner of Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid hold a 2-1 advantage heading into the second leg at Atletico’s stadium next week.

The Gunners’ performance in Eindhoven sends a strong message to their European rivals, proving that they are serious contenders in this season’s Champions League.
