Former Aston Villa striker Gary Shaw has tragically passed away at the age of 63 due to injuries sustained in a fall as reported by BBC.
Shaw, who was instrumental in Aston Villa’s success during the early 1980s, helped the club secure the 1981 league title and the prestigious European Cup in 1982.
Shaw, a boyhood Villa fan, came through the club’s youth system and became a fan favourite with his prolific goal-scoring ability. During his time with the team, he netted an impressive 79 goals in 213 appearances, cementing his legacy as one of Villa’s greats.
In a heartfelt statement released on Monday, Aston Villa said, “Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened to learn that Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning heroes, has passed away. Gary was one of our own, a talented striker who delighted supporters with his goalscoring exploits which helped fire Villa to success in the 1980s.”
The club also added that Shaw “passed away peacefully earlier today, surrounded by his family, who asked Aston Villa to release a statement on their behalf.” The club extended its deepest condolences to Shaw’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the immense grief they are facing.
Shaw’s footballing prowess earned him individual honours as well, including the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year award in 1981 and the European Young Player of the Year in 1982.
