Aston Villa thrashed Ajax at a raucous Villa Park to move into the Europa Conference League quarter-finals.
In a thrilling match at Villa Park, Aston Villa delivered a spectacular performance to defeat Ajax and advance to the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League, marking their first appearance in the last eight of a major European competition since 1998.
The victory was sealed with goals from Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey, substitute Jhon Duran, and Moussa Diaby, delighting the Villa fans in attendance.
The action-packed encounter began with Watkins opening the scoring in the 25th minute, heading in a corner delivered by Douglas Luiz. Unfortunately, Watkins had to leave the pitch due to injury in the 33rd minute, but not before making a significant impact.
Ajax, led by England midfielder Jordan Henderson, pushed hard for an equalizer before halftime, with Brian Brobbey coming close, only to be denied by Matty Cash’s goal-line clearance.
Villa extended their lead in the second half when Bailey showcased his skill and netted a superb goal after creating space with two stepovers.
Ajax faced further challenges when midfielder Sivert Mannsverk received a red card in the 66th minute, leaving them with a numerical disadvantage. Duran took advantage of the situation and added a third goal for Villa with a powerful strike.
Diaby then secured Villa’s victory with a fourth goal late in the game, confirming their spot in the next round of the competition.
For Henderson, it was a tough return to England after leaving Liverpool last summer. He faced boos from the Villa fans and was involved in both positive and difficult moments during the match, highlighting the highs and lows of his recent move to Ajax.
Despite the setback, Villa celebrated a memorable victory and will now look forward to their quarter-final clash in the Europa Conference League.
