The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University chapter, has issued a plea to Governor Agbu Kefas to intervene in the longstanding crisis of unpaid allowances totaling N1.7 billion.
The accumulated earned Academic and promotional allowances have been pending since 2014, causing significant distress among university staff.
Addressing reporters at the ASUU house in Taraba State University, Dr. Garba Mbave, the Union’s Chairperson, expressed deep concern over the non-payment of these allowances, which has not only strained the financial resources of staff but also eroded morale and trust in the institution’s integrity.
Dr. Mbave emphasized the detrimental effects of the delay, stating, “Each passing day without the payment of these outstanding salaries intensifies the financial strain on our members, pushing them further into distress and uncertainty.” He highlighted the potential for this situation to disrupt industrial harmony and compromise the productivity of the workforce.

Moreover, the absence of a pension scheme for university staff exacerbates financial insecurity and uncertainty, adding to the urgency of resolving the issue. Dr. Mbave urged the government to take decisive action and prioritize the prompt payment of the outstanding allowances and withheld salaries owed to ASUU members.
“The accumulation of these unpaid allowances since 2014 has only exacerbated grievances and discontent among our academic staff,” Dr. Mbave asserted. He stressed the need for immediate intervention to restore trust and ensure the well-being of university staff.
