Austin Eguavoen Sets Conditions For Permanent Super Eagles Coaching Role.
Super Eagles caretaker coach, Austine Eguavoen, has revealed that specific conditions must be met before he considers taking on the role of permanent head coach of Nigeria’s national football team.
Eguavoen, currently managing the Super Eagles for the fourth time, stepped in to guide the team through last month’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. The 58-year-old, who also serves as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), will continue in his temporary role for the upcoming fixtures against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
Despite his experience and current involvement with the team, Eguavoen has discussed the challenges and expectations that come with the possibility of staying on as the permanent head coach of the three-time African champions.
Speaking to Brila FM, he emphasised the need for patience and a long-term approach. “It will be a tough one. You have to give me a long-term contract with patience and clauses in that contract because winning is not guaranteed every week or day,” Eguavoen explained. “You will give me time to tweak the team till I find what I want.”
Eguavoen’s comments underline the complexities of leading a national team, especially in a football-loving country like Nigeria, where expectations are high, and results are closely scrutinised.
