Renowned Nigerian standup comedian, Basketmouth, has revealed why he stopped emceeing at wedding events.
The 46-year-old entertainer described his decision as a “sacrifice” necessary to maintain his artistic integrity.
“Hosting events as an MC feels like adulterating the art,” Basketmouth said during the premiere of his film ‘A Ghetto Love Story’.
He clarified that he only stopped emceeing at private gigs like weddings, not entirely quitting hosting duties. Instead, he will focus on standup comedy at private events.
“The only thing I have stopped is private gigs like weddings… It’s a sacrifice I have to make because I do standup comedy. I didn’t enter this industry to be an MC… I felt like I was adulterating the art, I felt bad about it and I had to stop.”
Basketmouth emphasized his commitment to his craft, prioritizing standup comedy over lucrative wedding gigs.
“Let me just do my 30 minutes and bounce, but not as the MC… I cannot do it anymore; that’s like cheating on my craft. I’m losing a lot of money, but it’s not about the money now.”
Born Bright Okpocha, Basketmouth is a leading figure in Nigerian standup comedy.
