The Nigerian Senate has taken a step toward the creation of a new state, as the bill seeking to establish Tiga State from Kano State successfully scaled its first reading on the Senate floor.
Senator Kawu Abdurrahman, representing Kano South Senatorial District, presented the bill titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523)” on Wednesday.
This legislative move comes amidst a wave of similar initiatives, as the upper legislative chamber was recently presented with several other state creation bills. Notably, Senator Ned Nwoko from Delta North has sponsored a bill for the creation of Anioma State in the South-East, aiming to equalize the number of states across Nigeria’s geo-political zones, ensuring each zone has six states.
In addition to Anioma State, there are ongoing legislative efforts for the creation of Orlu State, backed by Senator Osita Izunaso and House of Representatives member Ikenga Ugochineyere, as well as Etiti State, proposed by Amobi Godwin Ogah, representing the Isikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, along with support from four other lawmakers representing the affected communities.
The movement to create new states does not stop there; additional bills are being considered for the creation of new states from Lagos and other regions across Nigeria. These efforts reflect a growing demand for administrative restructuring and greater regional representation within the country.
