A dramatic aviation incident unfolded Tuesday evening at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, when a Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express crash-landed and somersaulted on the runway, leaving four people hospitalised.

Emergency Diversion and Crash

According to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the aircraft, registered 5N-ASR, was flying from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an in-flight emergency and diverted to Owerri.

The crash occurred around 8:00 pm during the aircraft’s approach to Runway 17, where it flipped upon landing. Despite the dramatic scene, no fatalities were reported. All four occupants were hospitalised for treatment.

Eyewitnesses and Airport Response

Pictures from the scene, shared by NSIB, show the aircraft overturned on the tarmac. An airport worker, speaking anonymously, confirmed the victims were taken to a hospital, though their exact health status could not be independently verified.

NSIB stated that airport emergency response teams arrived promptly, and there was no post-crash fire. Flight operations continued, with other aircraft taking off safely after the incident.

Investigation Activated

The NSIB has launched a formal investigation. NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., said the bureau had activated all investigative protocols and was coordinating with relevant authorities to secure the crash site.

“We express our deepest sympathies to Skypower Express management and are relieved that no fatalities have occurred. Our team is examining the aircraft and the crash site for a detailed assessment,” Captain Badeh Jr. said.
