Germany’s national team manager, Julian Nagelsmann, has committed to an extended contract that will see him leading the team until after the 2026 World Cup.
Nagelsmann, who took over from Hansi Flick in September 2023, expressed his deep connection to the role, describing it as an immense honor to coach the national team.
Under Nagelsmann’s leadership, Germany has seen notable successes, winning three out of six games since his appointment. His initial contract was set to expire in July, coinciding with Euro 2024, which Germany will host.
“This is a decision from the heart,” Nagelsmann stated, emphasizing his pride in coaching the national team. Looking ahead, the focus shifts to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Germany’s recent performances in major competitions have been under scrutiny, with exits at the group stage in the last two World Cups and a defeat to England in the first knockout phase of Euro 2020. The team faces a challenging group at Euro 2024, drawn alongside Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland.
Nagelsmann’s extension comes amidst speculation linking him to a return to Bayern Munich. However, Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), highlighted the significance of Nagelsmann’s continued tenure, providing stability and focus for the national team.
With recent victories against France and the Netherlands in friendlies, Germany is gearing up for Euro 2024, with upcoming matches against Ukraine and Greece in June as part of their preparation.
