President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 U.S. presidential election race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred candidate.
On Sunday, Biden expressed his gratitude towards Harris, stating, “Vice President Kamala Harris has been an extraordinary partner.” Shortly after his announcement, Biden took to X (formerly Twitter) to rally support for Harris’s presidential bid.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden’s post read.
He emphasised his confidence in Harris, stating, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Biden’s endorsement of Harris comes at a time when the United States has yet to elect a woman as president, despite other democratic nations like the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany having done so. Harris’s potential nomination marks a historic moment in U.S. politics as she vies to become the first woman president of the United States.
