A Nigerian Air Force (NAF), jet has reportedly crashed near Karabonde, a community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, sparking fear and confusion among villagers who witnessed the dramatic incident.
Shock in Karabonde as Jet Goes Down
The incident occurred around 4:10 p.m. on Saturday, according to multiple local sources. Residents said the jet descended rapidly before crashing on open land “very close to town,” raising alarms as loud explosions echoed through the area.
A Niger State–based media outlet, Lapai TV, first broke the news on its official Facebook page, posting a 57-second video accompanied by the caption:
“Two Nigerian Air Force Pilots Reportedly Survive Alpha Jet Crash Close to Karabonde, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.”
The footage showed thick smoke rising from a fiery crash site — a scene later corroborated by videos obtained by eyewitness, which confirmed the jet was engulfed in flames shortly after impact.
Eyewitnesses: ‘The pilots ejected safely’
An eyewitness shared a 48-second WhatsApp voice note and a 59-second video with reporters, confirming that the two pilots ejected moments before the aircraft hit the ground.
“I think the aircraft took off from the Kainji Air Force Base,” the witness said.
“We learnt that the Air Force is mobilising to the crash site.”
Another resident, Lukman Sulaiman, who spoke by phone to Punch, described the panic that gripped the community when the jet came down.

“The incident happened around 4:10 p.m. It landed very close to town but, God so good, the pilots ejected safely,” he said.
When asked whether the pilots appeared injured, Lukman added:
“Yes, we heard a noisy landing crash. We were scared. But we eventually started trooping back to the scene.”
Videos Capture Inferno at Crash Site
Two separate videos obtained by journalists show the wreckage burning intensely, with flames consuming much of the aircraft as villagers watched from a distance. The smoke could reportedly be seen from several kilometres away.
Military Yet to Issue Official Statement
Despite widespread online reports and confirmation from local witnesses, the Nigerian military has not released an official statement regarding the cause of the crash or the condition of the pilots. As of the time of this report, no details have been provided on the mission the Alpha Jet was undertaking before the crash.
The crash near Karabonde adds to a series of aviation incidents involving military aircraft in recent years, renewing conversations about aircraft maintenance, operational strain, and the safety of communities located near flight paths.
Community Relief — and Concern
While residents expressed relief that the pilots survived and the aircraft avoided dense residential areas, many also voiced concerns about how close the disaster came to claiming lives.
For the villagers who watched the jet fall from the sky, the evening will be remembered not only for the fear it caused but also for gratitude that a greater tragedy was avoided.
