New NIN Authentication Service Launched To Streamline Identity Verification In Nigeria.
In a significant step towards enhancing digital security and accessibility, the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the launch of a groundbreaking service by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The new NIN Authentication service, designed to simplify and secure identity verification using the National Identification Number (NIN), promises to revolutionise how Nigerians access government services.
The NIN Authentication platform, officially rolled out on Tuesday, allows users to verify their identities seamlessly through multiple channels, including web portals, mobile applications, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This versatile approach ensures that individuals can authenticate their NIN records in real time, fostering trust, transparency, and user control over personal data.
According to a statement from the NIMC, the service is set to become the exclusive platform for all NIN-based verification and authentication processes. “It is designed to facilitate real-time authentication of NIN records, thereby promoting effective service delivery, database harmonisation, and compliance with the National Identity Policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the commission noted.
The platform prioritises data security and privacy, requiring explicit user consent before personal information is shared for processes such as Know Your Customer (KYC) verifications. This feature aims to empower Nigerians with greater control over their digital identities, reducing the risk of identity theft and unauthorised data access. “By requiring explicit consent before data is shared, the platform fosters trust, transparency, and user autonomy in digital identity management,” said Kayode Adegoke, Head of NIMC’s Corporate Communications Unit.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorised the adoption of NIN Authentication across all federal government ministries, departments, and agencies, marking a pivotal move towards a unified and secure digital identity framework. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s national identity system, as reiterated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, earlier this year.
Nigerians can access the NIN Authentication service by downloading the NINAuth app, available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple iOS App Store. The app offers a user-friendly interface, enabling individuals to verify their identities and access key government services with ease.
The launch has been met with enthusiasm on social media, with posts on X praising the NIMC’s efforts under the leadership of Director-General Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote. Users have described the service as “seamless, secure, and convenient,” highlighting its potential to transform identity management in Nigeria.
The NIMC has also introduced new service charges to reflect current economic realities, the first adjustment in over a decade. The commission assured the public that the revised fees are designed to maintain service quality while keeping costs fair. Strict adherence to the approved pricing has been mandated, with warnings of sanctions, including potential licence revocation, for any partners found overcharging.
As Nigeria continues to advance its digital infrastructure, the NIN Authentication service represents a bold leap towards a more secure and inclusive identity ecosystem. The NIMC encourages Nigerians to embrace the platform and report any unauthorised activities to its official channels.
With this innovative service, the Federal Government and NIMC are paving the way for a future where identity verification is not only secure but also accessible to all Nigerians, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to digital transformation and governance.
