Nigerian Football Legend Christian Chukwu Dies At 74.
Christian Chukwu, the former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has passed away at the age of 74. His death was confirmed on Saturday, 12 April 2025, though details surrounding his passing remain unclear at this time.
Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman,” was a towering figure in Nigerian football. As a player, he captained the Green Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. Transitioning into coaching, he led the national team and also managed clubs both domestically and internationally, including stints in Kenya and Lebanon.
Tributes have poured in from across the football community. Former teammate Dr. Olusegun Odegbami expressed his sorrow, stating that between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, he received the news of Chukwu’s passing from Emmanuel Okala, describing Chukwu as a “bosom friend and teammate” and “one of the greatest football players” Nigeria has produced.
In 2021, Chukwu had to publicly debunk false rumours of his death, expressing embarrassment over the misinformation. At that time, he assured fans and the public of his well-being during his 70th birthday celebrations.
Christian Chukwu’s legacy in Nigerian football is indelible, and his contributions to the sport will be remembered for generations to come. He is survived by his family, friends, and countless admirers.
