Breaking News: Labour Party’s National Convention Declared Void By Nigeria Labour Congress

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has nullified the outcome of the national convention of the Labour Party, which reinstated Julius Abure as National Chairman along with his National Working Committee.

In response to this, stakeholders have announced plans to establish a transition committee to oversee the party’s affairs until new officers are elected within a three-month period.

Present at the meeting were representatives including Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku from the Chairman of NLC Political Commission, former NLC President Abdulwahed Omar, Sylvester Ejiofor, Chairman of LP Board of Trustees, and other notable figures within the party.

The stakeholders also discussed conducting a forensic audit of the Labour Party, as demanded by its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following allegations of corruption, forgery, and fraud against the party leadership.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting and obtained by GOVIMA, the stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership that emerged from the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, labelling it as illegal and inconsequential.

They called on relevant authorities, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, to recognize the transition committee as the interim leadership of the party.

Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, responded to the stakeholders’ actions, dismissing their authority and asserting that the National Working Committee cannot be intimidated.

The decision to pass a vote of no confidence on Abure and his NWC came after supporters of the Labour Party protested in Abuja against perceived harassment and interference in the party’s affairs. However, security operatives prevented them from accessing the venue of the NLC stakeholders meeting.

The stakeholders emphasized the commitment to an all-inclusive and expansive national convention within three months, reiterating the Labour Party’s stance as a party for all Nigerians, regardless of background.
