President Bola Tinubu has authorized immediate upgrade of infrastructure and equipment in 16 health institution spanning all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
According to a statement released by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, The modernisations are “in line with his administration’s vision of overhauling the health and social welfare sector…to ensure that world-class cancer diagnosis and care is accessible…to all Nigerians,” He stated
Ngelale said “These critical projects, set to be delivered within 12-18 months, will improve screening and diagnostics for communicable and non-communicable diseases; reduce mortality rates and improve outcomes for non-communicable diseases.”
Additionally, the upgrade initiative encompasses the establishment of oncology and nuclear medicine centers within six teaching hospitals, each to be completed within the specified timeframe.
The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Surulere and the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria are among the institutions slated for immediate improvement.
Beyond LUTH and ABUTH, other teaching hospitals earmarked for development include the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Edo State, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Enugu State, Federal Teaching Hospital in Katsina, and University of Jos Teaching Hospital in Plateau State.
Moreover, Tinubu has approved critical healthcare service expansion projects across various fields including radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology, and cardiac catheterization in 10 hospitals nationwide.
“These initiatives are poised not only to enhance healthcare delivery but also to create substantial employment opportunities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones,” Ngelale remarked.
