Premier League referee David Coote has been dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a “thorough investigation” into allegations of misconduct.
The 42-year-old official was suspended on 11 November after a video allegedly showing him making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp, surfaced on social media. Days later, further allegations emerged when photos published by *The Sun* reportedly depicted Coote using a white powder during the summer’s European Championship.
In a statement, the PGMOL described Coote’s actions as a “serious breach” of his employment contract, rendering his position “untenable.”
“David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract,” the statement read. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare.”
Coote has the right to appeal the decision against his dismissal.
Beyond the recent controversies, Coote has faced scrutiny for past behaviour. The Football Association (FA) is investigating claims that he discussed issuing a yellow card before a Championship match between Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in 2019. Coote has denied any wrongdoing, describing the allegation as “false and defamatory.”
Coote, a referee with extensive experience in English football, has officiated numerous high-profile matches. However, these allegations have brought his career to an abrupt end, raising questions about conduct standards for officials in professional football.
