United States President Donald Trump has declared Nigeria a country of particular concern over rising claims of widespread killings targeting Christians in several parts of the country.
The announcement, made on Thursday, has drawn global attention as it places Nigeria under a watch list for severe violations of religious freedom.
President Trump stated that Christianity in Nigeria is facing serious danger and alleged that violent attacks on Christian communities have continued to increase. He said, “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter.” He added that the United States is prepared to assist in protecting Christian populations where their safety is under threat.
Under the United States International Religious Freedom Act, a country listed as one of particular concern may face diplomatic and economic actions if found to be failing to protect religious rights. Although the designation does not automatically lead to sanctions, the United States now has the option of imposing restrictions on Nigeria if the situation does not improve.
The Nigerian government, however, strongly rejected the claim, insisting that the allegations of a Christian genocide are not accurate. Nigeria clarified that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of insecurity driven by banditry, terrorism, and farmer herder clashes. It stressed that the violence is not targeted at one religion. The government said it “strongly condemns and categorically refutes recent allegations suggesting that terrorists operating in Nigeria are engaged in a systematic genocide against Christians.”
The development follows increased pressure from United States lawmakers and Christian advocacy groups, who insist that thousands of Christians have reportedly lost their lives in violent attacks this year. Some groups claim that more than seven thousand Christians have been killed in Nigeria in 2025 alone and called on Washington to take urgent action.
President Trump also noted that he has directed key members of the United States House Committee to investigate the situation and provide a detailed report for further action. He said, “We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world,” stressing that the United States will not ignore reports of religious persecution.
