CAC Rolls Out New Mandatory Requirements For Business Name Updates

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), has introduced new mandatory requirements for all Business Name Online Update requests, signaling a renewed effort to strengthen compliance, improve data accuracy, and enhance the integrity of Nigeria’s corporate registry.

The announcement was made in a notice titled “Important Notice for Business Name Update,” posted on the Commission’s official X handle on Wednesday. According to the CAC, the new rules take immediate effect and apply to all business owners seeking to update records associated with their registered business names.

New Mandatory Requirements

Effective immediately, every Business Name Online Update request must now include:

  • Date of Birth

  • Registered Office Email

  • Proprietor’s Email

  • Phone Number for the registered address or for the proprietor (if different)

  • Valid Means of Identification

The Commission explains that these additional details are essential to ensure smooth and efficient processing of update requests. They also help verify identities, reduce fraudulent changes, and improve the accuracy of business data stored in the CAC registry.

Why the New Requirements Matter

The new update policy aligns with CAC’s broader push to modernise its digital systems and strengthen regulatory oversight. By requiring more complete identification and contact information, the Commission aims to:

  • Enhance the integrity and reliability of business-name records

  • Prevent misuse or fraudulent manipulation of business identities

  • Ensure compliance with provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA)

  • Improve communication between businesses and the Commission through verified channels

The update also fits into CAC’s ongoing digital transformation, which includes improved portals for business registration, name reservation, and post-registration services.

What Business Owners Should Do

To avoid delays, business owners are advised to:
  • Review the CAC portal and prepare all necessary documentation before submitting an update.

  • Ensure that both proprietor and business contact information are correct and up to date.

  • Provide a valid, acceptable form of identification.

  • Notify business partners, banks, and stakeholders once changes are successfully processed.

The CAC’s latest announcement reinforces its commitment to transparency, accountability, and a more secure corporate data environment. By tightening requirements for business-name updates, the Commission aims to ensure that Nigeria’s business registry remains accurate, trustworthy, and aligned with global best practices.
