Rivers United Set for Tough Quarter-Final Clash Against Defending Champions USM Alger in CAF Confederation Cup

Nigeria’s Rivers United find themselves facing a formidable challenge in the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, as they are drawn against defending champions USM Alger. The encounter promises to be a stern test for Rivers United, given USM Alger’s impressive track record as not only defending champions but also holders of the CAF Super Cup following their victory over Al Ahly of Egypt.

The draw, which took place on Tuesday in Cairo, unveiled a series of intriguing matchups, including the highly anticipated Egyptian derby between Zamalek and Future FC. Rivers United, formed from the merger of Dolphins and Sharks, have a history in the competition, having reached the finals in 2005, albeit ending as runners-up to Morocco’s Forces Armées Royales.

In the quarter-final draw, conducted on Tuesday, the competition champions – USM Alger, RS Berkane, Stade Malien, and RS Berkane – managed to avoid facing each other in the next stage of the tournament.

Another compelling quarter-final fixture features Libya’s Abu Salem squaring off against two-time champions RS Berkane of Morocco, who are eyeing their third continental title following triumphs in 2020 and 2022.

Meanwhile, former champions Stade Malien, winners of the 2009 edition, return to the knockout stages and are set to clash with Ghana’s Dreams FC. Dreams FC will be hoping to upset their more esteemed opponents and advance further in the competition.

As anticipation builds for the quarter-final matches, Rivers United fans eagerly await to see how their team and other teams navigate through the challenging stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.
