“CAF Chooses All-Cameroonian Referees For High-Stakes Nigeria-Mozambique Clash”

“CAF entrusts a full Cameroonian officiating team to manage the crucial Round of 16 encounter as Nigeria and Mozambique battle for a quarter-final spot.”

As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), 2025 enters its knockout phase, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has made a notable appointment ahead of one of the Round of 16 fixtures. For the high‑stakes match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Mozambique’s Mambas, CAF has named an all‑Cameroonian officiating team to oversee the encounter — a decision that underscores the governing body’s trust in Cameroon’s refereeing pedigree.

Officials Appointed

At the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco — the venue for Monday’s showdown — 29‑year‑old Abdou Abdel Mefire will serve as the centre referee for the match.

Despite his relatively young age, Mefire has built a strong reputation for composure and balanced decision‑making at the continental level. His recent performance officiating a high‑intensity group stage clash between hosts Morocco and Mali earned praise for clarity and calm, even when decisions were subject to VAR review.

Helping him manage the fixture will be Elvis Guy Noupue as the first assistant referee. Noupue is one of Cameroon’s most experienced match officials, with previous assignments that include FIFA World Cup matches — a testament to his reliability in big games.

The second assistant referee position is filled by Carine Atezambong Fomo, a respected female official with a strong track record in top‑level CAF competitions. Fomo has handled several major continental fixtures and is widely regarded for her consistency and professionalism.

Significance of the Appointment

CAF’s decision to appoint an entirely Cameroonian team reflects both confidence in the country’s refereeing standards and a continuing trend toward merit‑based selections at major tournaments.

The mix of youthful energy in Mefire and seasoned expertise in Noupue and Fomo offers a balanced crew that CAF hopes will maintain fairness and discipline in this crucial knockout contest.

The match between Nigeria and Mozambique is critical for both teams as they seek to advance to the AFCON quarter‑finals. It promises to be a competitive battle, and the spotlight will be firmly on the officials as they manage pivotal moments that could determine who moves further in the tournament.
