CAN Urges Federal Government To Tackle Insecurity On Nigeria’s 65th Anniversary

On Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) called on the federal government to urgently address the country’s worsening security challenges.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said insecurity remains the greatest obstacle to Nigeria’s growth and must be given top priority.

“Insecurity is the biggest threat to our unity and development as a nation. Without safety, there can be no real progress,” Archbishop Okoh declared in a statement issued today. He warned that Nigerians can no longer afford to live under constant fear of kidnappings, banditry, and terrorism.

The CAN leader reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence, noting that the people have endured civil war, political instability, and economic struggles. “Our resilience as a people is remarkable, but resilience alone cannot sustain us. Leaders must now match the people’s endurance with decisive action that restores peace,” he said.

Archbishop Okoh also acknowledged some of the government’s efforts in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. However, he cautioned that such improvements would remain fragile if insecurity persists. “True development is not just about statistics. It is about food on every table, safety in every community, and opportunities for every child,” he added.

He urged collaboration between government officials, community leaders, and religious bodies to address the root causes of violence. “The task of building a peaceful Nigeria is not for government alone. It requires unity, cooperation, and sincerity of purpose from all stakeholders,” he stated.

Concluding his message, Okoh prayed for Nigeria’s leaders to be granted wisdom and courage in tackling insecurity. He encouraged citizens to remain hopeful, adding that with the right policies and commitment, Nigeria can still achieve lasting peace and prosperity.
