The United States, in collaboration with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), has reinitiated crucial ceasefire discussions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Both countries Made this known during a press release to newsmen.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is acknowledged for its role as the host, and IGAD, representing the African Union as well, is welcomed as a co-facilitator in these talks.
In accordance with the principles outlined in the May 11 Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Safeguard the Civilian Population of Sudan, the renewed talks maintain a specific and focused agenda.
Their primary objectives are to expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid, establish ceasefires, and implement other trust-building measures, all with the ultimate aim of progressing towards a lasting cessation of hostilities.
‘Sudan’s civilians must be the ones to define Sudan’s path going forward and play the leading role in defining a process to address political issues and restore Sudan’s democratic transition.’
It is essential to note that these discussions will not encompass broader political matters. The destiny of Sudan must be shaped by its own citizens, and they are to take the lead in designing a process to address political concerns and reinstate Sudan’s path towards democratic transition.
Reiterating a consistent stance, it is also said that a military solution is not an acceptable resolution to the ongoing conflict.
An earnest appeal is made to the SAF and RSF to engage in the talks constructively, driven by the urgent need to save lives, diminish the conflict, and chart a course for a negotiated resolution to the hostilities.
The United States continues to urge all external actors to refrain from exacerbating the conflict. The moment has come to put an end to the senseless violence, reestablish civilian governance, and allow the people of Sudan to realize their aspirations for freedom, peace, and justice.
