Chairman House Committee On Sports Calls For Drastic Measures To Revive Nigerian Sports.
Honourable Ekene Abubakar Adams, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, has called for urgent and drastic measures to address the current challenges facing Nigerian sports. Amidst uncertainties about Team Nigeria’s performance at next month’s Olympic Games in Paris, Honourable Ekene emphasised the need for significant changes to rejuvenate the country’s sports sector.
Despite finishing second at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, Nigeria’s senior national team has struggled, raising concerns about their prospects at the upcoming Olympics. Honourable Ekene, who represents Chikun/Kajuru Federal constituency, stressed the importance of accountability and decisive action.
“In civilised worlds, people resign if they are not doing well,” Honourable Ekene said, referencing the recent resignation of Dortmund coach Edin Terzić after losing the UEFA Champions League final. “Maybe I am the one to even resign because the truth is people must learn how to throw in the towel if results are not good enough. I strongly believe something must be done.”
Regarding the possibility of the House Committee on Sports inviting the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Honourable Ekene expressed confidence in the actions already taken by the Minister of Sports. “There is no need for that again once the Minister of Sports has already invited them, and with what I saw, he takes the right steps in the right direction,” he noted.
The call for drastic measures underscores the urgency of addressing the issues plaguing Nigerian sports. As the Olympics approach, the focus will be on implementing effective strategies to improve performance and restore the country’s sporting reputation.
