Champions League: Arne Slot’s Liverpool Ran Riot Against Alonso’s Leverkusen At Anfield

As Arne Slot Reign Continue To Delight Anfield Faithfuls

Arne Slot Guides Liverpool To Victory, Overcoming Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen In Dominant Display.

When Jürgen Klopp announced in January that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, supporters immediately hoped to see club legend Xabi Alonso return as his successor. The former Champions League and FA Cup winner, now Bayer Leverkusen’s coach, was one of Europe’s hottest managerial prospects after an unbeaten domestic season in Germany. However, Alonso chose to remain with Leverkusen, prompting Liverpool’s management to turn to Arne Slot, the 46-year-old manager from Feyenoord, known for his tactical acumen and calm demeanour.

Slot’s arrival at Liverpool has quickly proven to be a success, with the Reds currently leading both the Premier League and the new Champions League format. On a memorable night at Anfield, Liverpool secured an emphatic 4-0 victory over Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, reinforcing Slot’s place in the hearts of Liverpool supporters. As Alonso returned to his former club, Liverpool fans were given no reason to regret what might have been, as Slot’s team produced yet another dominant performance.

The match saw Liverpool’s familiar second-half surge, with Luis Diaz completing a hat-trick to lead the charge. While Alonso was applauded by Liverpool fans and warmly acknowledged their appreciation after the match, the night belonged firmly to Slot’s side. Alonso’s Leverkusen initially held Liverpool at bay with a controlled first-half display, but Liverpool’s relentless pressure in the second half broke down the visitors’ resistance.

Slot, known for his understated approach, praised his side’s high-intensity play, though he admitted a desire for a quicker start in matches. “I would love to see this from the start, but the other team then normally has intensity too,” he said. “What I like is until now we keep producing this energy and keep going to a higher gear. Preferably we would start like this from the start but, as I said, we have to give credit to the opponent.”

Liverpool’s recent performances have demonstrated this trend, with the team scoring more goals and creating more chances in the second half of games. In fact, Liverpool have netted 22 second-half goals across all competitions this season, compared to 15 in the first half. This pattern was evident against Leverkusen, as their keeper, Lukas Hradecky, was left to fend off a flurry of shots after a quieter first half.

Despite the tough loss, Alonso graciously acknowledged Liverpool’s strengths, noting the team’s balance and defensive solidity. “It is early to tell but I can see Liverpool have a very good balance, a very complete team,” he commented. “They work the 11 players and have the power to keep a clean sheet, which is important in the Champions League.”

Slot’s Liverpool have now set a high standard, and the Dutchman has succeeded in winning over the Anfield faithful. His calm celebrations at the final whistle stood in contrast to the high-energy presence of Klopp, but the message was clear: Liverpool under Slot are capable of achieving great things.

Slot’s tenure at Liverpool may still be in its early stages, but his impact is already visible. His philosophy of intense pressing, combined with a structured strategy, has rejuvenated Liverpool, and fans are eager to see how far he can take this team. For now, Slot has given the Liverpool faithful every reason to believe in his leadership, and with victories like these, the Anfield faithful have all but forgotten their former hopes for Alonso’s return.
