Chidimma Adetshina:Puebla International Literature Festival Withdraws South Africa As 2024 Country-in-Focus

The Puebla International Literature Festival has announced its decision to rescind South Africa’s designation as the Country-in-Focus for this year’s event.

The decision, which also includes the withdrawal of invitations extended to South African guests, comes in response to recent developments in South Africa that have sparked concern within the African community.

In a statement issued by the Festival Director, Ikenna Okeh, the organisers expressed their deep regret over the events unfolding in South Africa, which they described as contributing to a “climate of mob rule.” The statement specifically referenced the victimisation of Chidimma Adetshina, her family, and other members of immigrant communities, which they believe undermines the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity that literature seeks to uphold.

“The Puebla International Literature Festival aims to be a beacon for the celebration of diverse voices, cultures, and ideas,” Okeh stated. “We believe that literature has the power to challenge the status quo, to speak to authority, and to give a voice to the voiceless. However, we cannot, in good conscience, honour a country as a focal point of our celebration when it is currently embroiled in such profound injustices.”

The decision follows widespread criticism of the silence from many within South Africa’s cultural sphere and the state apparatuses that, according to the festival organisers, have failed to address these issues. The controversy intensified following incidents surrounding the Miss South Africa beauty pageant, which have been linked to broader societal tensions.

While the festival’s decision is not intended as a rejection of South Africa’s rich literary heritage or its many courageous writers, poets, and artists, it serves as a statement against the current state of affairs in the country. The Puebla International Literature Festival reaffirmed its commitment to supporting South African writers and thinkers working towards positive change, emphasising that cultural recognition must be aligned with ethical responsibility.

The festival, which seeks to foster dialogue, understanding, and solidarity among nations, has called on the global literary community to reflect on the role of literature in confronting the challenges of the present time.
